As it happens, A Hotel Nourishing is not a famous or even a well known band about the nation. What they should be known for is starting a movement of well thought out and well crafted music amidst cannons of bubblegum garbage and hip hop waste. They transcend the muck and invest time and dedication to their craft.
The two band members are unaffected and have a residual peacefulness
that contributes their ethereal sound. Nothing is happening at that
moment, other than the noise that their limbs and lips are producing.
When Sonny Baker begins to sing, the audience is lost more in his grace
on stage than the actual lyrics themselves. There is no defined
sentence structure or end points, simply an amazing amount of
self-control over timing. Sonny does touch on social unrest now and
again, but in a simple, passive aggressive way that doesn't make you
feel coshed.
The drumming is its own entity, pit-pattering and forming soft sounds
that even the drum didn't know it could make. A Hotel Nourishing has a
definite knack for synchronization and timing that makes room for
negative space. The riffs are tight but whimsical, nearly appropriate
for a lullaby were it sans lyrics. To put it plainly, this music is
made for cups of coffee, flannel, favorite friends and silent film
screenings.
