Rumor has it two Canadian boys,
Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler (JFK) met in prison, aboard a pirate ship and at a gay bar, but that matters not. When these two did meet, wherever it was, the formed a duo that shook the likes of psycho sex rock. The reincarnated pair of 70’s porn stars put out their first record in the winter of 2002 and followed it up with a tour of the country. Fast forward years later and you are left with a pair of music geniuses who have stumbled upon new ventures and have completed the mission that they set out to, causing the DFA1979 split on August 4, 2006.
Nonetheless, DFA is not only remembered, but revered on sites throughout the blogging community and in basement parties. Their music is unmistakable and unequivocal in its meld of disco and metal, funk and glam. The pair neglected to hire a lead guitarists but tunes that offer moog oscillation and fuzz treated bass are lacking nothing. A bit of advice for first time listeners, once the vinyl is spinning or the mp3 downloaded, take care to see the disc through. The vocals have been equated by some to the vocals of a drummer but while Jesse may not have had any formal voice training, a better vocalist could not have surfaced. The beats are vicious and danceable and the lyrics, well they are outright naughty.
I love my girl
I want to get her off
Turn the lights up
So I can see
Turn the lights up
Turn the lights up
1-2-3
Push in
1-2-3
Pull out
Let your spirit free girl
Some good lovin’ happens after listening to this record. Speaking of good lovin’, Sebastien and JFK are loved for the unusual rips and waves they fade off with and the uncompromising nature of the pair who, until the end were using the same amps that filtered their first gig in the living room of a Long Island Home. Get over your devotion to a certain music genre and listen up already.
