Russian Circles: They Aren’t Squares

The Russian Circles have melded their own genre with an inventive combination of classical instrumentals and heavy metal. The band’s overall appearance is a structured frenzy of red lights and instruments, long hair and armless tees, they are a dynamic duo armed with real actual talent.

Maybe the most fascinating part of their whole experience is their pain free and fluid transitions between light and dark; metal dense riffs and calming strums. The delicate patterns that they lay form a difficult path to follow for undeserving bands who would otherwise be content to stand in the Circle’s limelight. They enter the studio and spend all day pumping out muscle and gnashing guitars only to merge and sneak attack you with an innocuous album.

The epic sound produced on their record was previously only fathomed by aged metalheads who would still like some music with their dinner and dates. The great thing about these guys, (the other great thing) is that they are not cultish. I myself, appreciate some good ambient, ethereal music, some indie, some good old, blue collared Oi! and still, these guys are good in my book – classically, originally good. “Russian Circles utilizes elements of math rock, prog, metal, and swooping indie post-rock capacities, but the boys succeed mostly in creating a layered mood. The music is as intense as it is soothingly subdued. It is the weaving of the quiet to loud dynamics that set the band apart,” says Daytrotter Online.
