Steep Coffee, Not So Steep Price

You can go to an Aldi’s or a Save a lot and purchase cheap, stale coffee, or you can do it the right way. You want to save money, buy a French Press. As for the grounds? You want to have large course coffee grounds and the cheapest way to do that is to buy in bulk. Roam around the coffee aisle at your favorite supermarket until you find the beans that sate your palette. Grind them yourself in the store’s grinder and the amount will be more cost effective than having the process done for you.

Materials!

1 French Press: $12.00

(A French Press comes with a filter, but replacements are available.)

Water

1 Tea Kettle, optional: $19.99, or a stove top pot will work also

Coffee Beans: Local Supermarket or order wholesale ($4.67 for a 5 lb. bag)

1 Grinder, optional: $10.99

Preparation!

Measure one Tablespoon of coffee grounds for every one cup of water.

Pour the grounds into the French Press.

Side note - the higher quality the water, the better your coffee will taste. Fill a tea kettle with water and bring the water to a boil.

Make Coffee!

Pour the water directly into the French Press over the coffee grounds.

Put the French Press lid on the pot, but do not depress the plunger yet. Putting the lid on the French Press will ensure that your coffee will retain heat for the appropriate amount of time.

Let the coffee “steep” for 3 to 5 minutes. In the meanwhile, run a mug under hot water so that the cold ceramic does not cool your coffee.

Gently press the French Press plunger down. The mesh filter will push the coffee grounds to the bottom and separate the liquid from the coffee grounds.

Pour the coffee into your favorite mug and enjoy!

Cheap ways to flavor coffee!

Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg into the grounds. Salt can be added as well (yes, salt) to bring out the flavor in a cheaper brand of coffee bean.
