In fact Beer Pong is so damn great it has an anthem!
The Basics
Beer Pong is a drinking game in which players throw a ping pong ball across a table with the intent of landing the ball in one of several cups of beer on the other end. The game typically consists of two two-player teams, one on each side of a table, and a number of cups set up on each side. There are no official rules but usually there are six, ten or 15 plastic cups arranged in a triangle on each side. The game ends when the opposite team eliminates all the other teams cups by getting the ball in them(called sinking the ball).
What You Need
A Table- 6-10 feet in length
6, 10, or 15 cups – 12 oz. or 16 oz.
2 pong balls
Of course some BEER!
2 water cups so wash the balls (pong balls!!!! keep your mind out the gutter)
Beer Pong Table
Having a good beer pong table is key to the game. Ideally the table is 8' in length and very sturdy.
Believe it or not, professional beer pong tables do exist.
This table is a tourament grade portable beer pong table that folds up for easy transport.
Price is $89.99, but well worth it if you are a avid beer pong player.

Set up
You set up the table with cups on either side in the formation of a triangle. A ten cup set up has 4 cups in the back row, 3 then 2 then 1. If you're doing a 15 cup set up make the last row have 5, then 4 and so forth.
How to Play- Pretty Simple But Rules Vary
Set up depends on the amount of cups being used. They are normally arranged in a triangle. Filled ¼ or ½ of the way with beer.
The team who won the last game is usually given the opportunity to shoot first, if no previous game was played, house rules usually apply. You can play rock, paper scissors, or shoot normally to see who makes it first alternating people. Pretty much you can make up your own rules.
There are typically 4 types of shots:
-
Underhand- not shown in photo (picture an underhanded baseball shot)
-
Bounce Shot- Bounce off center point of the table
Usually the distance you must be from the table to shoot varies by region and house rules. Leaning may or may not be allowed. If leaning is allowed any cups that are knocked over while leaning are automatically taken out, leaving your team at a disadvantage.
Note: Always establish rules before starting the game… once your drunk it’s not a good idea to try to make up rules as you go! For wild nights use a ref.
If the team with the ball makes the shot in the opponents’ cups they must drink the beer in that cup. (TAKE THE BALL OUT FIRST!)
Once your opponent has eliminated all your cups (meaning made all their shots into your cups) you lose!
Common Rules
Trash Talking- The most widely used and essential form defense… there is nothing like a good psych-out!
Rerack/Reform- When your opponent has knocked out most of your cups they can be rearranged to create a new formation. For instance if you started with 6 cups and only have 2 left you can rerack them to create a new formation.
Blowing/Swatting- typical defense methods. Blowing is when the ball is rimming the cup, you can blow the ball out. (GUYS I DON’T RECOMMEND THIS FOR YOU!) Swatting is used when a ball bounces on the table, you can swat the ball away from your cups. ( This one is more guy friendly but still can make you a pansy)
Roll Back/Balls Back- Roll backs aka balls back are the terms used if both players on a team make their shots. This means that that team gets the balls back for a second turn essentially skipping the other teams turn.
Rebuttal- Used when a team makes their shot into the final cup on the table. (gives the other team a chance to redeem themselves) The opposing team must make all their shots or they automatically lose.
Drink Before You Sink- You must drink all the beer in your cup before you make your next shot.
Spaced Cups- Spaced cups are when the formation of the cups has enough space between each one for a ball to fall through, making it a bit harder to make a shot.
